Russian plane bursts into flames after 'powerful explosion' minutes after takeoff

The Aviastar aircraft took off from Baikal Airport in Ulan-Ude heading for the Chinese city of Zhangzhou when an explosion saw the left engine catch fire.

The plane dumped its fuel before making an emergency landing using one engine, according to Alexey Tsydenov, head of the Buryatia region.

The incident resulted in no casualties – there were five crew onboard – and was being investigated by the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office.

Russia has suffered a series of air accidents earning it a “red flag” from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The country has seen 120 incidents in Russia involving civil aircraft operated by Russian airlines in just the first eight months of 2023.

Some of this has been attributed to Western sanctions which have targeted Russia’s ability to purchase spare aircraft parts.
