Royal letters to Jimmy Saville from Charles, Diana, William and Harry go on auction

Handwritten letters and telegrams from members of the Royal Family to notorious paedophile Jimmy Savile are being auctioned in the US.

The letters addressed to the disgraced comedian are being sold by RR Auction, based in the US.

There are nine items available, including an invitation from Princess Diana, pictures of Diana and Charles together and a telegram with a birthday message addressed to Savile, signed by Prince William and Prince Harry.

The auction also includes letters from former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

A collection of seven letters from Thatcher has 13 bids and is currently listed for $700 (£558).

All of the items were listed for $200 (£159), and an original honeymoon photograph of King Charles and Princess Diana has nine bids, going at almost $500 (£398), most of the things listed currently have only one bid.

The auction ends today (February 14).

Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at RR Auction, said: “Every piece of history holds a story, even those intertwined with controversy like the Jimmy Savile lots up for auction.”

Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment.

Before his death, Savile was one of Britain’s most beloved entertainers.

He was one of the biggest TV stars in the UK from the 1960s to the 1990s, and he was known for TV shows such as Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It.

But after his death in October 2011, at aged 84, an ITV documentary revealed decades of horrific sexual abuse in which Savile had used his involvement in organisations such as charities, hospitals, prisons and the BBC, to abuse hundreds of vulnerable young girls and boys.

The documentary led to further allegations of sexual abuse and several public inquiries.
