Royal Family residence haunted by ghost of 'giggling' young boy who drowned in a well

One of the Royal Family’s main residences in the UK is haunted by the ghost of a young boy who drowned in a now-covered well, a former member of staff claimed.

Stories of sinister encounters within the ancient walls of the monarch’s many homes come as no surprise – the ancient institution has, after all, long been shrouded in an aura of mystery.

But a former butler to King Charles III said royal staffers have been passing on tales of the most chilling hauntings for years and years.

Grant Harrold said the most prominent case he learned of during his service was that of a “giggling” boy still haunting an “important” royal home.

He told Express.co.uk: “In one important residence of the Royal Family, there is a well. The well is now covered up, and you can’t see it anymore.

“But 100 years ago, it was in use and there was a fire at this property, and a little boy apparently fell down the well during the fire.

“He sadly drowned and he was buried in one of the local churchyards. Since then, there have been stories that his ghost haunts the cellar, which used to be the well.”

Harrold, who worked for the now-King for seven years, believes he even encountered the boy himself when he visited the cellar with a colleague.

He added: “I remember when I used to go down to the cellar, things would move. You would have bowls and chairs that would move.

“One day, I went down with a housekeeper, we turned off the lights and we could hear a little boy giggling. It’s safe to say there are ghosts within royal residences to this day.”

Discussing the most hair-raising royal residence he worked in, Harrold noted Sandringham was especially eerie.

He noted two former kings died at the royal’s Norfolk pile, including King Charles III’s grandfather and great-grandfather.

The residence is especially well-known as the late Queen Elizabeth’s favoured winter retreat as she would spend her time at the estate from mid-December until the anniversary of her father’s death in the first week of February.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Harrold added: “I have found Sandringham to be an eerie house. It would always feel a bit strange when wandering around in the night.

“It has a lot of history behind it and it’s had a lot of royal deaths there. George VI died there, as well as George V and even the Duke of Clarence. So, it’s hardly surprising there have been paranormal sightings.”
