Royal Family LIVE: Meghan Markle's subtle change to wardrobe was 'calculated move'

Meghan Markle’s wardrobe during the Invictus Games this week which garnered a lot of attention was a “calculated move” to put Prince Harry into the limelight, claims a royal expert.

The Duchess of Sussex, who reportedly wore a £300k wardrobe in six days at the Games opted for rather subtle colours rather than wearing bright clothes.

Daniela Elser, a royal expert wrote for news.com.au: “The Duchess of Sussex, in taking her wardrobe off the table story-wise this week, would seem to be trying to ensure that the spotlight and attention remains on the Games and her thinning-haired other half, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. No limelight stealing here, no siree!

“Thus carry the two, subtract one and you get Meghan wearing the blandest clothing I have ever witnessed on Getty Images to the Invictus Games.

“Consider this the Duchess of Sussex’s best attempt to fade into the background while Harry struggles to wipe the joyful smile off his face as he excitedly hugs his way around the Games.”

Some of the key outfits she wore saw her amass a daily total outfit spend of over £267k on her first day in Germany on Tuesday September 12.

The pricey total came from items including a £961.14 Rayures d’Ete Shawl from Hermes, a £2,122.65 Goyard ‘St. Louis PM’ tote bag, a £20,824.70 Cartier yellow gold Tank Francaise watch and her £140,000 Welsh Gold Wedding Band.

The Duchess of Sussex is renowned for her love of designer brands, costly accessories and sparkling jewels worth thousands of dollars.

Ms Elser continued: “What has instead played out in Dusseldörf this week is a whole new look for the 42-year-old whose wardrobe has been so low-key as to qualify as officially plain: Jeans and flats in blacks and browns, a relentlessly neutral palette that makes one wonder if her stylist might have gone colour blind, and an absolute dearth of glamour.”
