Royal Family LIVE: Kate seen as ‘trusted lieutenant’ to King despite 'showing up' Charles

The King welcomes having a “trusted lieutenant” to share the responsibility of the crown despite some aides previously claiming courtiers were “alarmed” by Kate recently mopping up press attention at a royal event, an expert has said. Princess Kate appeared to steal the show as she unexpectedly appeared at the annual Chelsea Flower Show (CFS) last week. She was pictured beaming as she met children, also delighted to see her, at the event and swept up lots of media coverage for her attendance.

Despite the suggestion that Kate was stepping on the King’s toes, Russell Myers, Daily Mirror Royal Editor, explained that King Charles is likely embracing William and Kate’s appeal to the younger generation who have been shown to be apathetic about the Royal Family in polls.

He told Sky News Australia: “I think that the King and Queen would welcome that association to try to give them a smoother path in [the] infancy of King Charles’s reign.”

He added that the Waleses are adept at targeting the younger generation through the social media videos they’re posting.

It comes Princess Kate emerges as the people’s favourite royal in an Express.co.uk poll. The poll, asking “Who is your favourite royal?”, saw Charles trail behind in fifth place.
