'Royal Family are the Kardashians with crowns' as interest in Firm piqued by Sussex chaos

The Royal Family “are the Kardashians with crowns” as the public see them like “light entertainment”, a royal commentator has said.

Australian commentator Angela Mollard claimed young people now engage more with the drama and less with the history of the Royal Family.

She wrote in a column for the Mail: “We might not have quite the reverence we afforded the late Queen Elizabeth, but Megxit, Spare and The Crown have repositioned the royals as light entertainment for a generation who engage more with the drama and less the history.

“However disrespectful it might sound, the royal family are the Kardashians with crowns for many younger Australians.”

The commentator added the tabloid magazine industry sees the Sussexes as a “money-spinner” and notes that she also gets asked about them regularly by the public.

She said: “As a royal commentator on two of our popular TV networks I’m routinely stopped by members of the public asking about some royal story or another.

“‘What do you think will happen with Meghan and Harry?’ has replaced house prices as a staple barbecue conversation starter, particularly as Sydney enjoys unseasonably warm midwinter temperatures of 25 degrees.”

Interest in the Royal Family has heightened ever since Meghan and Harry’s dramatic exit from the Firm at the start of 2020.

Since then, the couple have made headlines when they appeared on Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and spoke about their experience as working royals.

After Megxit, the pair have also secured several business deals — including partnerships with Netflix and Spotify.

In August 2022, Meghan’s first podcast series, “Archetypes” was launched and was a hit among fans.

It topped the leaderboard as the No. 1 podcast in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada within days of its premiere but it didn’t get renewed for a second season.

Later in the year, their project titled “Harry & Meghan” was released on Netflix.

The six-part series gave viewers an inside look at the couple’s relationship from how they met to their royal exit.

In January 2023, Harry made headlines again when he released his highly anticipated tell-all, Spare.

In the memoir, he opened up about his relationships with several members of the royal family, including Prince William, King Charles III and more.
