Roy Keane has accused Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk of ‘disrespecting’ Manchester United. The Red Devils played out a 0-0 draw with their fierce rivals at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, with the most significant moment in the match coming late on when Diogo Dalot was shown two yellow cards for dissent.
Liverpool dominated possession during the match but failed to create many clear-cut chances and wasting numerous openings to try and unlock the United defence – who battled valiantly for 90 minutes. Speaking after the game, Van Dijk claimed that his side were the only team trying to clinch all three points, explaining: “They’re (United) not in the best phase right now so coming here, you’re wary of the threat we have.
“But we should’ve won it today and that’s the disappointing thing. We can’t dwell on it though, we have big games coming up. If you see how we played the game, we had most of the ball, created the most opportunities and there was only one team that was trying to win the game and unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
However, Van Dijk’s comments didn’t sit well with Sky Sports pundit Keane, who made 326 appearances for the Red Devils in his career and is widely regarded as one of their most influential captains. The ex-Ipswich boss fumed at the comments, feeling that Van Dijk was speaking disrespectfully about his former side.
He raged: “It is a missed opportunity for them yes, and we heard Van Dijk speaking there – a bit of arrogance from Van Dijk dissing United, he needs to remind himself he’s playing for a club that’s won one title in 30 odd years. He said one team wanted to win like Man United aren’t in a difficult place! Liverpool were in a difficult place for many years before this – maybe that arrogance backfired on him today. That’s arrogance, he said Man United were buzzing. United had one or two chances that they could’ve taken but players like him need a reminder that they’re playing for clubs like Liverpool that aren’t this or that. I wouldn’t be disrespecting clubs like he is.”
