Roy Hodgson blasts Virgil van Dijk in scathing VAR rant as Palace boss mulls retirement

Roy Hodgson accused Virgil van Dijk of trying to get Jordan Ayew booked on purpose after Liverpool came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The Eagles took the lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta after half-time before Ayew was sent off after picking up two yellow cards, which allowed Liverpool to turn the result on its head.

Mohamed Salah hit back almost immediately to level the scores before Harvey Elliott popped up with a last-minute winner, with the result seeing Liverpool go top of the Premier League table. Hodgson was left furious with how things played out after the full-time whistle, with the Palace boss singling out Van Dijk for criticism and raising questions over his own future in management.

“Van Dijk took the opportunity to get him [Ayew] the first yellow card, which was very disappointing,” he told TNT Sports, referring to Van Dijk kicking the ball against Ayew prior to his initial booking.

“The second one I thought was a good challenge. Even if it was deemed a foul, it wasn’t a yellow. I’ve been in football a long time. Games like today make me realise when I come to leave it behind I won’t be missing it.”
