Rosalynn Carter in hospice care just 11 months after Jimmy began receiving treatment

Rosalynn Carter, the wife of former US president Jimmy Carter, has now joined her husband in at-home hospice care, The Carter Center has announced.

Rosalynn, a renowned philanthropist, was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year. Her husband has been receiving hospice care at home since January.

The Carter Center wrote in a statement: “Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has entered hospice care at home. She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family.

“The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support.”

The Carters are the nation’s longest-married presidential couple, living a “quiet and calm” life at their home in Plains, Georgia, according to one of their grandsons.

Josh Carter said to People: “They are still holding hands. It’s just amazing.”

Rosalynn turned 96 in August, while Jimmy turned 99 in October. They were seen in public together in late September at the Plains Peanut Festival, which is largely held in their honor.

The couple won the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers Lifetime Achievement Award two months ago for their several humanitarian achievements.

Rosalynn has been known for championing mental health awareness, and she founded the annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy.

She also inspired the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers.
