Ronnie O'Sullivan 'in a hole mentally' despite reaching Tour Championship final

Ronnie O’Sullivan insisted he is still battling his demons and is ‘in a hole mentally’ despite beating Gary Wilson to reach the Tour Championship final. In an absorbing contest that ebbed and flowed, the ‘Rocket’ gave up a two-frame advantage for the second time as his opponent pegged him back to 7-7, before upping the tempo to prevail 10-7 and finish on a sublime 129 clearance.

For much of the contest, the world No.1 was not at his flowing best, and at one point suffered a terrible kick as he missed a simple red. He was also penalised for a ‘push’ shot, and yet still found a way to make a 64th ranking final as his stellar season continues.

But in his post-match interview, the 48-year-old revealed he is still in frequent consultation with psychiatrist Steve Peters and is still struggling mentally. “I’ve just got to commit to it for a good year and try and get myself out of this hole I’ve got myself in,” he said.

“Mentally, this obsession with the game, this tinkering…..and I know I’m never going to stop tinkering but “I’ve got to somehow get my head strong enough and not go too deep into that horrible, murky world that it is. Every sportsman….golfer, snooker player, darts….we all do it. But I went so deep into it.”
