Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka's former coach 'had to amputate his foot'

Peter Lundgren has announced that he had his left foot amputated. The 58-year-old previously coached the likes of Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka and was a tennis player himself, reaching No 25 in the world. The news comes a month after Lundgren revealed that he broke his foot.

Lundgren took to social media to announce that he had to amputate his left foot as a result of an infection he picked up. It comes after he broke his foot last month. “I was going to give an update on my foot,” the Swedish tennis coach wrote on social media.

“Unfortunately I had to amputate my foot and a bit up to 10 days ago and because of the infection I had and my broken ankle did not heal because of my type 2 diabetes you get bad circulation.”

Federer’s former coach is set to begin his rehabilitation process as he added: “But now I feel well again and soon my rehab will begin and it’s just give the iron now.” A month ago, Lundgren revealed that he had been hospitalised after breaking his left foot.

“I broke my foot last week! And I will be at the hospital for a long time for healing and infection treatment. The people here are treating me well,” he wrote in September. The 58-year-old started his coaching career when he worked with Marcelo Rios, helping the Chilean break into the world’s top 10.

After taking on a role in Swiss Tennis Federation, he ended up coaching Federer from 2000 to 2003. During their time together, Lundgren guided Federer to his maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003.
