Rishi Sunak set to make major post-Brexit announcement today

The Governemt is set to put out a major post-Brexit announcement today, with ministers expected to unveil streamlined post-Brexit checks on goods coming to the UK from the EU. The checks, which are legally required under the Brexit trade deal with the European Union, have been delayed by the Government four times.

The Cabinet Office is expected to publish details of how the new customs and regulatory process will work later today.

The checks will not be introduced until later this year.

While the Government is expected to have reduced the checks as much as feasibly possible, there are still expected to be thorough checks on food and animal products.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson told the i: “The Government is delivering on our ambition to have the world’s most effective border.

“Our new target operating model will reduce the need for checks for many types of goods.

“We are working with stakeholders and are taking a pragmatic approach to phasing in these controls to give business the opportunity to prepare.”

This comes just days after queues engulfed the Port of Dover, as Easter holiday tourists attempted to make their way to France.

A critical incident was declared at the port on Friday as traffic built up at the port as a result of increased numbers of holidaymakers passing through the border.

Speaking over the weekend, Suella Braverman said it would be unfair to view the delays as “an adverse effect of Brexit”.

The PM’s official spokesman said a “combination of factors” were responsible for the issues, including French border officers “inspecting and stamping every single passport”.
