Restaurant's brilliant response to customer moaning at £8 cost of fish and chips


A restaurant has clapped back at a customer who moaned about the £8 cost of their fish and chips.

Oxton Bar and Kitchen, a restaurant in Wirral, Merseyside, was criticised by Debbie Davies in a scathing Facebook review.

Ms Davies was initially pleased by her experience at the eatery, praising the “lovely” food and “amazing” staff.

But she complained about her £8 “small” fish and chips saying she could not justify the price.

The restaurant, however, refused to take the criticism lying down and defended its pricing in a lengthy reply on the social media platform discovered by the Liverpool Echo.

In her review, Ms Davies gave the restaurant a lowly two-star review, prompting a bold response from its official Facebook account.

The Oxton Bar and Kitchen replied with an itemised breakdown of every factor that decides their food pricing and impacts their takings.

They explained that their takings from every £8 meal are immediately reduced by £1.34 thanks to the “nasty Government” and its 20 percent VAT, leaving them with £6.66.

With the remainder, the restaurant said they required the ingredients for each plate, including fish, beer batter and more, which come to a total cost of approximately £2.70.

The account joked that their “pesky chef” expects “remuneration” from the remaining £3.94, as do the “amazing” staff praised by Ms Davies.

Utility bills and business rates claim the rest, the post added, before challenging their irate customer to recreate the experience at home if they weren’t satisfied with the price.

The response concluded: “So if £3.94 is not justifiable for creating and affording this whole experience with us, you’re welcome to recreate it in the comfort of your own home.”

“I doubt it’ll be long before the government find a tax for that too.”

The reply appears to have silenced the Oxton Bar and Kitchen’s Facebook critic, who is yet to respond.

And it went down well amongst the restaurant’s followers, with more than 200 people having “liked” the post.
