Residents discover shopping trolley on top of a lamppost sparking a conspiracy theory

Residents were left scratching their heads following the bizarre discovery of a shopping trolley – on top of a lamppost.

Fire crews were called out to deal with the “dangerous structure” after the trolley was spotted hanging around 10m (32ft) in the air at a retail park last week.

Mystery surrounds how the shopping cart ended up in the precarious position at Malvern Shopping Park, in Worcestershire.

Gemma Barker had been at work when she spotted the unusual sight and took photos as she was worried “nobody would believe her”.

She said: “Yesterday evening after work, I pulled onto the retail park and looked up as I approached M&S at the trolley dangling from the lamp post and couldn’t stop laughing.

“It looked like it couldn’t be possible for something that heavy to be all the way up there – and yet it was. No idea who did it or how they did it, but it made me laugh.

“I honestly thought nobody would believe me if I told them, so I tried to photograph it as best I could.”

Gemma posted her pictures on Facebook, where people shared their theories of how the trolley got there – including the suggestion that aliens were involved.

Another commented: “That’s actually an impressive shot” while one woman put: “I just wanna know how.”

A fourth person said: “Some pranksters no doubt but you’ve got to admire the effort and determination. I’ve seen them dumped in canals etc but this is a first!”

Another wrote: “I can’t get it to go round a corner at times. I am super impressed they did this.”

One resident added “I have so many questions” and another said: “Well someone isn’t get their £1 back now.”

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) confirmed a special rope rescue team from Malvern fire station were called out to a ‘dangerous structure’ on October 5.

The crew responded to the retail park on Roman Way, Malvern, at 1.09pm and used rope rescue tools to remove the trolley.
