Mason Greenwood allegedly said “f*** you” to referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez before receiving the first red card of his career in Getafe’s ill-tempered defeat against Rayo Vallecano. On-loan Manchester United forward was one of three Getafe players sent off in the La Liga clash, which Rayo won 2-0.
Juanma Latasa was dismissed in the closing stages of the first half as Getafe fell apart. Greenwood was then shown a red card five minutes into the second period.
The 22-year-old was sent off for foul and abusive language, with the referee now reportedly submitting his official report. It is alleged that Greenwood shouted “f*** you” at Figueroa Vazquez.
After the official dismissed Greenwood, the winger is claimed to have placed his finger to his temple. He repeatedly made this gesture to display his disapproval with the decision.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Figueroa Vazquez’s report reads: “In the 50th minute, Getafe player Mason Greenwood was sent off for the following reason: for addressing me in protest and raising his arm, in the following terms: ‘f*** you!’
“Once expelled, he puts his finger to his temple, making a repeated gesture as a sign of disagreement with the decision made.”
Greenwood’s sending-off all but ended Getafe’s chances of a comeback, with Vallecano leading 2-0 at the time thanks to Sergio Camello’s brace. Things got uglier for the Madrid-based outfit as Damian Suarez saw red.
Getafe’s eight men rather respectively managed to limit their opponents to just the two goals. However, they will now miss Greenwood to suspension.
Bans for foul and abusive language tend to be two matches, although Greenwood’s dismissal will be put in front of Spain’s Competition Committee to decide his fate. The fact that Figueroa Vazquez noted Greenwood continuing to gesture even after he was sent off may result in a lengthier suspension.
Greenwood had just hit form for his loan club, having taken a while to get up to speed. He joined Getafe from United in the summer after it was decided that his career would be better served away from Old Trafford.
In March 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behaviour against the one-cap England international due to the withdrawal of a key witness. He denied all of the charges.
Greenwood has scored five goals in 16 appearances for Getafe. It remains to be seen if the new hierarchy at United – led by INEOS chief Jim Ratcliffe – will take a more lenient view and welcome the player back to Old Trafford. As it stands, United are insistent that it is extremely unlikely that he will play for them again.
