Queen Elizabeth II gave her blessing to Queen Camilla and wished that she be titled ‘Queen Consort’ when her son, now King Charles, becomes monarch for a very particular reason, a royal expert has claimed.
The late monarch made the announcement on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee back in 2022.
At the time, the 95-year-old said: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
But former royal butler Paul Burrell, who served Charles’s ex-wife Princess Diana from 1987 until her death in August 1997 speculated there might have been an incident between the late monarch and her son that led to the announcement.
Speaking on behalf of Slingo, ahead of The Crown’s sixth season release – Burrell described Diana as “the best Queen we never had” before going on to discuss the Queen’s public backing of Camilla.

Speaking about Diana’s death – which will be played out in the final season of The Crown – he said: “I think a lot of people feel it’s not fair, they feel it’s not how this fairytale should have ended, and they are hanging on to the fact that she was a young mother and died so tragically.”
He added that Charles may have gone to his late mother and plead for Camilla’s approval so the public can accept her.
The former royal butler continued: “I think the people in this country truly feel that Diana is the best Queen we never had and it was her rightful place.
“The other thing is the fact that our late Queen did say that she wished Camilla to be known as the Queen consort.
“I think Charles went to his mother and said ‘if you say this people will believe it and take it on board because your good will is paramount. If you die and I say this they will not accept it’.
“Charles actually took it one step further and made and styled her as Queen in every way he could.
“I think that’s a problem for the general public, to see Camilla wearing a crown and being called Queen.”
