Queen of Spain rushed to hospital as all royal engagements cancelled

Spain’s Queen Sofia has been rushed to hospital, prompting all royal engagements to be cancelled.

The royal was rushed to a hospital in Madrid after developing a urinary tract infection.

In a statement, the Spanish Royal Household said that Queen Sofia was recovering from the illness, but will remain overnight for observation.

Queen Sofia’s husband, King Juan Carlos, is also receiving treatment in Madrid at the Ruber International Clinic.

Queen Sofia had been due to visit a food bank in Huesca later this month on April 12 but this has been cancelled so she can focus on her recovery.

Queen Sofia is mother to King Felipe VI, one of three children she had with King Juan Carlos along with Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina.

Focus on her health comes nearly eight years after her husband King Juan abdicated the throne in favour of the now King Felipe.

As news of his mother’s health was revealed, King Felipe reportedly continued to carry out royal engagements including holding a military audience in Madrid at the Royal Palace.

Earlier today, King Felipe was pictured arriving at the Ruber International Clinic to visit his mother and provide support as she continues her treatment.

Despite no longer being monarch, Queen Sofia was still scheduled to be carrying out royal duties. She became Queen in 1975 after marrying Juan Carlos a few years earlier.

Originally Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark, she reportedly met Juan Carlos in the 1950s before they fell in love in the 1960s and married in 1962.
