Putin triggers major surge in nuclear threat with breakaway from US treaty

Roughly 220,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or severely wounded while fighting in Ukraine, UK defence minister Ben Wallace has estimated.

Addressing the latest US intelligence regarding the current casualty figures, Mr Wallace said he believed the estimate was accurate.

Of those 220,000, the number of dead is believed to be between 40,000 and 60,000.

Military analysts with knowledge of Western intelligence have told Express.co.uk that the Ukrainian figures are roughly half of the Russian toll.

They suggested that roughly 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, while a further 70,000 or so have been injured, though they added that it was significantly easier for the defending forces to recover their wounded.

They said that the Ukrainian figures had been roughly a third of the Russian toll prior to the sweeping counter offensives of last summer and towards the new year.
