Putin expansion plans put Russia at risk as terror attacks more than tripled in last year

Vladimir Putin has seen Russia’s national security levels reach their worst since his first term following the invasion of Ukraine.

A new report from the independent news outlet Verstka showed terror attacks in Russia more than tripled between 2022 and 2023.

The outlet reviewed data from the Internal Affairs Ministry, which began compiling a list of all terror attacks across Russian territory three years into Putin’s first term in office.

In 2003, the ministry recorded 561 terrorist attacks – including more than a dozen in widely-crowded areas that resulted in the death of more than a hundred people.

Since hitting a low of 15 terror attacks in 2005, the number steadily spiked following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 – with Russia reporting 127 in the months following the attack and then 410 in 2023.
