Princess Margaret's self-taught musician grandson who remains out of the royal spotlight

Princess Margaret’s grandson is her only grandchild to have a title but has chosen to remain out of the public eye and lead a private life. Charles Armstrong Jones is the son of Margaret’s eldest child, David Armstrong Jones, Earl of Snowdon. Charles was given the title Viscount Linsley and typically only appears during major national events, including most recently Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and King Charles’s Coronation.

But despite being the great-nephew of the late Queen and now the second cousin of King Charles, he has remained out of the spotlight.

Like many young royals, Charles attended Eton College before going on to study design engineering at Loughborough University.

Since then, he has gone on to show off his artistic side as a musician.

His younger sister Lady Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne Armstrong-Jones told Tatler magazine: “He is very into his orchestral music. He is self-taught and can sing, play the piano and the guitar.

“Somehow he combines it all together – including online choirs – on his laptop into one piece of music.”

In Princess Margaret’s final years, Charles and his parents, Lord Snowdon and his then-wife Serena Stanhope, moved into Kensington Palace to look after the royal until she died in 2002.

In the same year, Charles’s younger sister Margarita was born.

Following Margaret’s death, Queen Elizabeth wanted to maintain a close relationship with her nephew and regularly invited him and is family to join them at Sandringham over Christmas.

At the age of 12, Charles was appointed as the first Page of Honour for the late Queen and he was required to carry the Queen’s robes on state occasions, a role he kept until 2015.

Speaking previously about his role, one courtier told The Telegraph: “Charles never made a fuss about not being made a pageboy, but the Queen was keen to ensure that he did not feel left out.”

But unlike his sister, Charles did not play a role in the wedding of the now Prince and Princess of Wales.

Prince William and Kate tied the knot in Westminster Abbey in April 2011, with Margarita, who was just eight years old as one of the young bridesmaids.

As Viscount Linley, Charles is 26th in line to the throne and heir apparent to the Earldom of Snowdon, which he will inherit after his father.
