Princess Kate's fear over Queen's Christmas gift that could have gone 'horribly wrong'

Princess Kate once gave the late Queen Elizabeth a Christmas present that could “have gone horribly wrong”.

The Princess of Wales now attends the Royal Family’s Christmas celebrations in Sandringham regularly as the wife of Prince William and the future Queen.

But it wasn’t until their wedding in 2011 that she started doing so and Kate has previously spoken about her first Sandringham experience.

Buying Christmas presents for your in-laws can be hard enough but it can be even more stressful if you’re in-laws are the Royal Family.

Princess Kate revealed she was especially worried about buying a present for a particular member of the Family – the late Queen Elizabeth.

Back in 2016 and during a documentary for the late monarch’s 90th birthday, Kate said: “I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas.

“And I was worried about what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?'”

And then the idea for the perfect gift struck her but it could have gone “horribly wrong”.

She added: “I thought, ‘I’ll make her something, which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney.

“I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day that it was on the table. I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody.”

It comes as the Family is preparing to head to Sandringham for this year’s festivities.

This will be King Charles’s second Christmas as monarch and he is said to have made a few tweaks this year, including extending the Sandringham guest list to include Queen Camilla’s family.
