Princess Kate’s ‘demand’ that caused huge rift with Meghan Markle

Prince Harry claims that Meghan Markle was “left sobbing” after his wife and Princess Kate’s interaction in the lead-up to their royal wedding in 2018. The Duke of Sussex alleges the pair had a heated exchange regarding Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaids dress which did not fit her properly, and in turn, made Princess Kate upset.

Prince Harry, detailed the events in his memoir, Spare, which was published in January 2023, last year.

The Prince claims Kate sent Meghan Markle a text message that said: “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home.”

Following Princess Kate’s remarks, Megan suggested Princess Charlotte see a tailor who had been waiting at Kensington Palace so the dress could be fixed.

However, at first, the mother of three, reportedly refused the offer to go and demanded all the dresses should be remade.

Meghan messaged her sister-in-law to say: “I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit then please take Charlotte to see Ajay (the tailor), he’s been waiting all day.”

According to Harry’s recollections in the memoir, she eventually reluctantly agreed to do so. However, he said the argument had left Meghan “in tears”. This argument was also spoken about during Harry and Meghan’s infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Meghan claimed Kate had made her cry and “really hurt” her feelings, but also that she had apologised.

Meghan revealed to Oprah during the televised interview: “And she brought me flowers and a note, apologising. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the tailor, Ajay Mirpuri, said he had worked around the clock with three members of his staff to finish the dresses after it was discovered that none of the six bridesmaids’ dresses fitted.

Mr Mirpuiri said: “I’ve no idea what measurements Givenchy had received, but with our experience and knowledge we could see straight away that all six bridesmaids’ dresses had to be fixed, as they weren’t going to fit.”

He added: “If anything happened in the background, it didn’t happen in front of me.”

Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, officially becoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
