Princess Kate's candid comment on brief split from Prince William while at university

Princess Kate admitted she “wasn’t happy” about brief break-up with Prince William after the pair met while studying at the same university.

In an interview, she said the break up “actually made me a stronger person”. The Prince and Princess of Wales met at the University of St Andrews where their relationship eventually blossomed.

The couple started out as friends, with Kate admitting she was “nervous” when she first met the future heir to the throne.

But after getting to know eachother in their shared student accommodation block, the couple took the next step in their relationship.

The couple have now been married for over 12 years and are parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

But it wasn’t always a smooth ride for the now Prince and Princess of Wales, with the couple briefly splitting in 2007.

After they got engaged in 2010, the couple took part in an interview where Kate and William discussed the break-up.

She said: “At the time I wasn’t very happy about it but actually it made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time, for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time.”

William added: “We did split up for a bit. We were both very young, it was at university and we were both finding ourselves and being different characters and stuff. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up. It was just a bit of space. It worked out for the better.”

Kate also discussed the moment she first met William.

While she recalled the moment they met like it was yesterday, William struggled to remember it exactly. Kate reminded him: “I actually went bright red when I met you and scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting you.”

She added: “William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other. But we did become very close friends from quite early on.”

Kate and William studied Art History at the university in rural Fife, Scotland.
