Backless silhouettes aren’t usually what fans anticipate when it comes to royal fashion, but Princess Kate has occasionally turned up the glitz with daring outfits.
These backless dresses offer some subtle glitz without being overtly revealing and have been popular since the 1930s.
Princess Kate, who fans might not typically connect with revealing clothing, did give the trend a nod in 2012 with her turquoise lace Jenny Packham gown.
The Princess wore a teal gown by Jenny Packham. It was the Aspen style which originally retailed for £2,875.
It was made from silk and Chantilly lace. The dress featured a distinctive ornate back made from sheer lace with a row of buttons and sparkling crystals.
It also had matching lace cap sleeves, a lace bodice and a pleated silk floor-length skirt. A sash at the waist was decorated with more crystals.
Originally in ivory, this design was from Jenny Packham’s Spring/Summer 2012 Bridal collection.
The designer produced the gown in teal for Kate. The original bridal gown also had a short train but Kate had this removed.
In 2018, the Princess wore the gown again. This time, to the Tusk Trust Conservation Awards.
The second time Kate wore a backless dress was in 2015 at the James Bond Spectre premiere.
The Princess chose a Jenny Packham Bespoke Diaphanous Evening Gown. The dress featured a glittering diamante waistband, buttons on the sheer sleeves and a gorgeous open-back design.
The dress was based on a similar design from Jenny Packham’s Spring 2011 collection.
Its description said: “This bespoke gown from Jenny Packham features a halter top base with a filmy chiffon overlay that featured a cross-over bodice and a slashed back.”
