Princess Kate and William offered crucial advice about using a nanny for their children

Princess Kate and Prince William have been offered advice about parenting and using a nanny for their three children, as the couple try to navigate senior royal responsibilities while being a relatively normal family.

Recently the Prince and Princess have been criticised for “shirking” royal duties in order to spend more time with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis during the school holidays.

However parenting expert Brenda Hart has acknowledged that while children need to be “adaptable” to the pressures of modern working life, it is still crucial that Kate and William spend quality family time together.

She told Express.co.uk: “Children are adaptable and if they need to be looked after by their nanny they will accept this. However, if they are to have a well balanced family life they will still need to see their parents as regularly as possible.

“Catherine and William still need to be there as their parents and oversee the children’s emotional needs are met.”

The expert added that it was Princess Diana’s legacy that changed royal parenting forever, as before her it had generally been a hands-off approach.

She said: “I do often give the Royal Family as an example when speaking to families as the children are always very well behaved and have had to be centre stage from the day they are born.

“Their lives are not easy and it was Princess Diana who changed the role of a princess and a mum to that of a more hands on job. Diana wanted to be a mum looking after her own boys as much as possible.

“I expect Catherine is following by her example because if she is to influence and keep a stable family home Catherine needs to be involved with the children’s care as much as she can be. Her role as a working royal comes secondary to that of being a mum.”

William and Kate have employed Norland nanny Maria Borrallo to look after their children ever since George was a baby in 2014, but they have made it clear over the past few months that family life will always take priority over royal duties.

In May this year the Princess opened up about motherhood, saying: “It’s a constant challenge – you hear it time after time from mums, even mums who aren’t necessarily working and aren’t pulled in the directions of having to juggle work life and family life.

“I think it makes such a difference for your child, keeping them as constant and happy as possible.”

Kensington Palace also confirmed that Kate will not be joining William when he travels to Singapore in November for the 2023 Earthshot Awards, as she has chosen to support George at home during his school entrance exams.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said of the decision: “William and Catherine attended the last two Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremonies in London and Boston together.

“It’s understood she wants to be with George because of his exams and it will be appreciated that the Waleses want to set an example of good parenting, that will be totally understood.”
