Prince William has shared that he has become Patron of The Fleming Centre, a position which holds a special link to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis

The new centre will be based in the hospital that he, and his three children, were born in and where Sir Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic.

The centre, which will be based at St Mary’s Hospital, will drive a global movement to tackle antimicrobial resistance.

In a tweet posted on the official Twitter account for the Prince and Princess of Wales, William shared that he “proud” to take on the new role.

The tweet read: “Over one million people a year die as a result of antimicrobial resistance. The Fleming Centre will drive a global movement to tackle it. Proud to become Patron of the appeal to create this vital centre, which will educate, inspire and catalyse action to solve this problem.”

Having already killed a million people worldwide each year, antimicrobial resistance occurs when the microbes that cause infections develop resistance to treatments such as antibiotics.

It has been found that if left not resolved, it will lead to more than ten million death each year.

The Fleming Centre aims to deliver exhibitions and engagement activities to inspire and educate in order for change to happen.

Prince William will offer his support over the next five years to make ambitious plans that could force action into place.
