Prince William risked royal crisis by snubbing engagement tradition with proposal to Kate

In the interview, William said: “Well, I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first and then the realisation that he might actually say ‘no’ dawned upon me.

“So I thought if I ask Kate first then he can’t really say no. So I did it that way round.”

He did admit that he then spoke to Michael Middleton, adding: “I managed to speak to Mike soon after it happened really and then it sort of happened from there.”

Luckily, Kate said yes and Michael was said to be very happy that his daughter was marrying William – whom she met at the University of St Andrews in 2001.

On November 16, 2010, the couple appeared at St James Palace in front of photographers to announce their exciting news.

During the photocall, Princess Kate showed off her stunning engagement ring, which had once belonged to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana.

Just five months later, the couple tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.

Now 12 years later, Kate and William have since welcomed three children – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five.

Last September, following the death of the late Queen, William and Kate became the new Prince and Princess of Wales – titles previously held by William’s parents.

The couple, along with their three children, now live in Windsor after relocating there from London last year.

The pair have often been referred to as two of the most popular royals, having taken on more prominence in The Firm in recent months.
