Prince William 'putting family first' as he tries to 'normalise' Princess Kate's absence

Prince William has been trying to “normalise” life for his three children as much as possible while Kate, the Princess of Wales is away from home, according to an expert.

The Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery last week and is due to remain in hospital for another few days before her expected return to to Adelaide Cottage.

Kensington Palace has confirmed William cancelled most of his engagements for the time being to support his wife and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis while she recovers.

The decision has won the Prince of Wales praise, with royal author Robert Hardman describing him as a “modern dad” focussed on his family.

He said: “I mean, in years gone by, if a senior member of the Royal Family was ill, their spouse would not drop everything.

He told US Weekly: “Everything he does is about normalising royal life, normalising just trying to make everything as unobtrusive for the kids as possible so that being a sort of school-age royal is not something that’s scary.

“So if Mum’s in hospital, he knows he’s got to be there. Otherwise, it’s unsettling for the children if both parents are out of the house.”

In the statement announcing Kate’s abdominal surgery Kensington Palace suggested the Princess of Wales is unlikely to resume royal duties before Easter.

And while William is expected to stay put in Windsor to help her and their children for the time being, he will likely return to hold engagements before Spring.
