Prince William 'drew the line' at appearing with Prince Harry — 'It's understandable'

Prince William was the honoured guest at last night’s The Diana Legacy Awards, but he “drew the line at actually appearing with his brother” says one royal expert, who finds “it understandable.”

Royal writer Richard Eden appeared on Palace Confidential, saying: “This is really unusual, we don’t see Harry and William at many events together, sort of speak,” hinting at the fact, that they would not be sharing the stage.

Mr Eden said of The Diana Award: “It’s an organisation they are both involved in, obviously very important, it’s trying to continue the legacy of their mother, so it’s something they care about a lot.”

“It sounds like Prince William drew the line at actually appearing with his bother, and, who could blame him?”

Eden put himself in William’s shoes, saying: “We’re not expecting him to watch, again, it’s quite understandable.”

He adds: “You can imagine, William having to stare at the screen, while all of these sort of images of William having to stare at the screen, so they’re avoiding that, so he’ll be gone by that point.”

As predicted by Eden, William gave his speech and handed out awards, and once William completed his part of the ceremony, Harry then appeared on video and engaged with the winners, congratulating them and delivering a pep talk.

In his speech, which was livestreamed, Harry said to the award recipients: “Every single day when you’re working on these things, you don’t even know the impact that it’s making, you don’t know when you meet people, and you have those interactions, you may have potentially changed their day, change their outlook, changed their perspective, give them a little bit more hope, and hopefully, inspired them to go off and do something similar.”

“I am seriously impressed with the work that you do, especially at the young age that your at, the future is yours, right, and you’re helping to shape that future.”

He thanked the winners for “inspiring others” and “protecting” his mother’s legacy.

The Diana Award was established in 1999, two years following the death of Princess Diana. The awards ceremony is held every other year, and recognises young leaders in the name of William and Harry’s late mother, Diana.

Willam also expressed gratitude in his speech, saying: “I know that she would have been honoured to see a charity in her name doing such inspirational work to uplift young people from all corners of the globe.”

“She taught me that everyone has the potential to give something back, that everyone in need deserves a supporting hand in life. I am so proud to see this brief of my mother’s manifested in the amazing young people receiving the Legacy Award tonight.”
