Prince William and Princess Kate's unusual bedroom layout in their London apartment

The Prince and Princess of Wales upped sticks from London and opted for a family home in Windsor a year ago – but the floorplan of their former home has raised eyebrows.

Prince William and Princess Kate moved to rural four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate back in September 2022 – leaving their former home of Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace behind.

It had been reported at the time they had wanted to make the change to be closer to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who sadly died the same month they moved in.

The future king and queen, and their three children; Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have certainly downsized, as their old apartment actually had 20 bedrooms.

With a wealth of space, it also had an unusual layout.

MyLondon reported the floorplan has unveiled about how the family of five cohabited together when they called it their family home.

The plans of the royal residence show that Prince William and Princess Kate have two master bedrooms – on the ground floor.

While most average homes have bedrooms upstairs, there’s a good reason why they had swerved the upper floors.

This is because they were dedicated to their staff – an entourage of employees, which at the time included their still full-time royal nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo.

When the Waleses decided to move into the much-smaller Adelaide Cottage, Ms Borrallo, who has been nannying for the royal family since 2014, was placed in another property nearby.

Of course, no one has seen inside the couple’s private sleeping quarters, but they have been treated to glimpses inside other parts of their stunning abode.

When the Obamas came to visit them, the Cambridges released images of the then US President and First Lady being welcomed into their regal home.

Their drawing room is very typical of a standard palace, featuring floral furnishings, golden accessories and plenty of antique items.

The position of the bedrooms in the palace may be unusual but what was surprisingly normal is that their children’s bedrooms at Kensington Palace had been decorated using IKEA furniture, according to reports. This, it was claimed, was because the Waleses liked its “durability.”

1A Kensington Palace is still reserved for the Prince and Princess of Wales – and is known as their London residence.

The four storey property, with a south-facing walled garden takes up half the Clock Tower wing was originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren for King William and Queen Mary.
