Prince William and Princess Kate ‘are the monarchy’s big hope'

Prince William and Princess Kate are scheduled to take a break from their royal duties, while Kate recovers from her abdominal surgery.

And while the time off is needed, and it’s the responsible thing to do, their absence will be felt.

Daily Express spoke to royal expert Pauline Maclaran about William and Kate and what they mean to the Royal Family, with her saying: “I think William and Kate are the monarchy’s big hope, really, for the future, because it was really well-known that Charles and Camilla’s transition to King and Queen was always going to be a little bit of a difficult period.”

Maclaran continued: “They are out and about a lot, and I think that’s the forward-looking side of the monarchy, going into the future, that is what will keep the monarch intact in the future.

“This idea that William and Kate are quite glamorous figures and will come with youthful ideas and be the change-makers in the future.”

She added: “They have to treat that role carefully because if they’re too accessible, they ruin the mystique altogether.

“And if they are not accessible enough, people expect them to be accessible because that’s what we’re used to in a consumer culture now, we’re used to the idea that they serve us and we expect them to be approachable up to a point.”

When the Waleses are at full-force they carry out several engagements a week and it’s very common to hear them asking members of the public about themselves, taking a more personal interest than simply focusing on their official duties.

While Kate convalesces after surgery, the Prince of Wales also confirmed he will be cutting back on duties to take care of their three children.

Kensington Palace confirmed in a statement Kate is not expected to return to her official work until Easter at the earliest.
