Prince Harry 'tearful' as emotions 'leak out and take over' during Invictus Games speech

Prince Harry displayed strong emotions and appeared overwhelmed at times during his speech at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games on Saturday night, while Meghan Markle watched, beaming from the stands.

The Invictus Games, held this year in Düsseldorf, Germany, concluded on last night.

Prince Harry, 39, and his wife Meghan Markle, 42, were present among the attendees following the week-long sporting event.

The Duke delivered a speech on stage at the Merkur Spiel Arena during the ceremony, and it appears that he conveyed a strong emotional presence.

Judi James, body language expert, told The Mirror: “It was very telling of Harry’s inner emotions during this closing ceremony that he appeared to have written a rather lecturing, hard-hitting speech to his audience, which he tried to deliver with the pacing, fist-waggling, finger-pointing style of a military leader.

“However his body language told a different story as his emotions leaked out and at times took over.

“At one point he appeared tearful when he stopped speaking and wiped his mouth with his hand.”

She continued: “These emotions were visible from the start when some non-stop lip-licking and lip-clamping looked like a sure sign of pressure or nerves.

“His pointing and pacing looked like a show of strength but then there was a hugging of the mic with both hands and some ear-scratching that looked like self-comfort or self-distraction rituals.

“His body language veered between leadership and humility and one of his only smiles came after he spoke in German for a couple of phrases.

“Unlike his usual style there were no jokes, no banter, no show-boating and no love-story-style references to his wife or his family.”

The body language expert went on to say that Harry’s arrival on stage appeared “spontaneous” and “low-key”.

Judi said: “He almost snuck on while a Ukrainian competitor was being interviewed, surprising the presenter who was presumably expecting to give him a huge build-up.

She also spoke about Harry appearing alongside Meghan during the closing ceremony, saying: “It was a very different performance from Harry and Meghan as a couple tonight, with Harry’s brief appearance on stage but no speech or stage appearance from Meghan.

“He seemed to be projecting a more low-key profile with gestures and poses of humility, even sitting with his hands between his legs and his head bowed as he was called out from the stage.”

The body language expert added: “His emotions looked strong, but Meghan took a pose of solid support and energy beside him in the audience, clapping, dancing, hugging and high-clapping through the entire ceremony.

“Her facial expression said it all as she watched his emotional speech on stage, clapping and smiling up at him and clearly egging him on proudly.”
