Prince Harry celebrated another success after his memoir, Spare, emerged as the bestselling book of 2023 in the UK, as he and his wife, Meghan Markle, look to take on different paths in their careers.
The Duke of Sussex’s tell-all book sold more than 700,000 copies last year after it hit the shelves in January, new figures showed. It outsold the second entry in the list by 180,000 copies, according to data obtained by The Bookseller.
Spare sold 706,978 copies in total in 2023, whilst Richard Osman’s The Last Devil to Die sold 529,532 copies. On top of that Osman outsold Harry with his total sales of the year – as he enjoyed a total of four of the top 20 spots.
Titles in the top five-selling books from last year included two from Richard Osman, as well as a cookbook called Bored of Lunch and another book, Lessons in Chemistry. The top 20 featured entries from authors Colleen Hoover and Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Hoover was another popular author among UK readers as she occupied four of the top 20 best-selling books. It Ends With Us, Verity and IT Starts With Us all made the list – with the latter listed twice to include both hardback and paperback sales.
Spare unleashed a series of bombshell claims and attacks against the Royal Family.
Harry gave an insight into the life of the royals and his rift with the Firm and among his claims was an incident between him and his older brother, Prince William, in which the Prince of Wales became “physical” towards him, while he also accused his brother and his wife, Princess Kate of encouraging him to wear the infamous Nazi uniform at a 2005 fancy dress party.
Elsewhere in the memoir, Harry claimed he and his brother begged King Charles not to marry Queen Camilla, whom he described as a “wicked stepmother”.
Spare also included details of the Duke’s loss of virginity to an older woman in a field behind a very busy pub and his cocaine use.
It comes and the duke is rumoured to be looking to change his strategy with fewer attacks against the royals, in a different approach to Meghan, who wants to focus on her career in showbiz.
Harry has been said to want to mend the rift with his estranged family. Meanwhile, Meghan is rumoured to be looking to work in several fields whether that be politics, acting or even lifestyle.
