Prince Harry and Meghan snubbed by Hollywood elite over 'lack of talent and hard work'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s snub by Hollywood’s elite came as they do not possess the “consistency, talent and hard work” that their fellow filmmakers possess.

That’s the brutal assessment of royal expert and podcast host Kinsey Schofield, who told Daily Express US that she could never imagine the Sussexes rubbing shoulders with some of Hollywood’s most influential stars.

The couple had widely been touted as potential nominees thanks to their tell-all documentary Harry & Meghan, which became a Netflix hit in December.

Offering viewers an insight into their lives, the documentary was Harry and Meghan’s first foray into documentary-making for Netflix after their eye-watering content deal was signed three years ago.

Hours before the Emmy shortlist reveal, the couple were celebrating after being confirmed among nominees in the documentary category for the Hollywood Critics Awards.

But Ms Schofield, who hosts the To Di For Daily podcast, said she could not imagine “Harry and Meghan sitting next to the cast of HBO’s Succession” when it came to Emmy Award night.

She told Daily Express US: “Netflix’s Harry & Meghan was a one-sided docu-series full of contradictions.

“It left a lot to be desired. LA LA Land rewards consistency, talent, and hard work. Some would argue that those are qualities that the Sussexes lack.”

In the build-up to Harry & Meghan’s release on Netflix last year, Meghan discussed the project with Variety, describing how it was “nice to be able to trust someone with our story… even if it means it may be not told in the way we would have told it”.

She added that that was not the main motivation behind them wishing to tell it, adding: “We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.”

Many critics had speculated that the documentary would be added to the documentary shortlist, particularly considering the huge viewing figures it brought to Netflix.

Reports say that on its opening day more than 2.4 million people tuned in to watch it – a huge figure. Compared to The Crown, it enjoyed a fraction of the same numbers with 1.1 million when its fifth season debuted.

The couple, who quit their senior royal duties in 2020 to pursue a more private life in the US, have endured a difficult period in recent weeks.

Last month, Spotify announced it would no longer be working with the pair on podcast projects, bringing an end to its association with the Archetypes broadcast after one season.

For Sally Baker, a senior therapist and relationship expert at Working On The Body, says people will pick criticism with the Sussexes whatever the result.

She told the Daily Mirror US: “Doubters and haters are going to hate and doubt and will use their omission from the Emmy Awards after making the shortlist to further damn Meghan and Harry’s creative work. Had they won they’d be accused of being mere shoo-ins.”
