Prince George turning 10 today – but he's already having meetings preparing to be King

Prince George will celebrate his 10th birthday with his family, as he’s now on summer break and won’t go back with his pals at Lambrook School, Berkshire until September 6.

Reports that the future King won’t have to join the British armed forces like his royal predecessors have been played down.

After all, as King will be commander chief of the British army, Royal Air Force, and Royal Navy, so first-hand experience wouldn’t go amiss.

This has raised questions about what qualifications a 21st-century King needs. Should he spend a stint at the Foreign Office watching diplomats at work?

Prince George is a studious and sporty schoolboy, who loves soccer.

When he was at Thomas’s, his previous school, he regularly collected “Golden Unicorns” – sticker prizes handed out for good schoolwork to tying your shoelaces.

Born at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington on July 22, 2013, and was introduced to the world to a glare of publicity the next day at just 24 hours old.

His mum Princess Kate and dad Prince William guarded his privacy since then.

But increasingly we are seeing him in public, at soccer and cricket matches with his dad, and at the Wimbledon Men’s Final on a family outing.

He looks the spitting image of his dad and apparently insists on dressing like him too – with a jacket and tie – when the occasion requires.

He gets on well with his loving granddad King Charles III too and famously took part in the Coronation as a Page of Honour and didn’t put a foot wrong.

I’m told his informal chats with his grandfather are becoming more frequent.

You sense, just like William’s relationship with the late queen, Elizabeth II, when he was an Eton schoolboy, George’s close bond with the King will be important in preparing for his future role.

Robert Jobson is a royal expert who regularly appears on live television news bulletins and in historical documentaries.

He is the author of several acclaimed books, including his recent biography – “Our King: Charles III – The Man and the Monarch Revealed” which was a Sunday Times bestseller.
