Pretty little market town pops up again on list of UK's best places

A gorgeous little market town has once again clinched a top spot in a list of the best places to live in the UK.

The picturesque town of Sherborne in rural Dorset is a haven for visitors who flock to its high street for its array of independent shops and boutiques.

But the town is also a little slice of heaven for those who actually live there, at least according to The Sunday Times latest ‘Best Places to Live in the UK 2024’ rundown which ranked it top spot for the south west of the country.

The guide said: “A busy high street and high-class education help to make this community-centred, cultured town our best address in the southwest.

“Sherborne is also handsome and historic, but it’s the friendly, energetic population that really makes it stand out.

“There are more than 200 community groups covering every conceivable interest, while the opening of Sherborne House as a high-end arts and community centre later this spring will add extra cachet to a town that already has a perceptible spring in its step.”

The Dorset tourism website – visit-dorset.com – only had good things to say about the area calling it “without doubt one of the most beautiful towns in England”.

It said: “The charming, honey-coloured town is brimming with history and heritage and you’re sure to be impressed by the array of beautiful buildings, including a magnificent Abbey, that make Sherborne so special.”

The picture perfect town has two castles, a romantic ruin and a plethora of vibrant events and local markets. And for those who would like to up sticks and relocate to the area, property prices aren’t extortionate.

According to Rightmove, the average property price in the town is £325,371 which is above the UK national average of £284,691.

So what do residents think of Sherborne? Taking to Mumsnet – a parenting forum – users talked about its highlights.

One said: “Sherborne is friendly and offers a lot considering it is not very big. I am thinking of various events and festivals, societies of all kinds, and essential shops.”

Another said: “Sherborne is a great place with plenty of young people. The state schools are highly thought of and there are three good independents.

“A great cultural scene too with music and arts festivals. Excellent restaurants and bars and well supported markets.”
