Postman honoured for life-saving act at Heart Hero Awards

Dan Howells, 42, was sorting mail when Darryl Taylor’s wife Anne ran in, calling for help.

Finding 78-year-old Darryl unresponsive on the floor, Dan sprang into action with CPR, which he had learned 15 years earlier as a football coach.

Once an ambulance arrived 15 minutes later, Darryl was breathing and even talking again.

Since the tense rescue in November 2022, the pair had an “emotional” reunion and now catch up monthly.

Dan said: “Instead of panicking, I reacted straight away…I’m proud of what I did and that Darryl is still here to tell the story, he’s had another Christmas and birthday because of me – it was just right time, right place.”

The Royal Mail worker, of Stourbridge, West Mids, was given a CPR Hero award by the British Heart Foundation at a glitzy ceremony in London this week, where he posed with members of pop group S Club.

Also attending the bash was Pippa Middleton, left, the Princess of Wales’ younger sister.

Another winner was learning mentor Louise Walton, 55, of Castleford, West Yorks, who did CPR for seven minutes when her school’s assistant headteacher Jolie Pender, 31, fell down in front of 200 pupils in an assembly in February.

Louise, right with Jolie, said: “There was no way I was going to let her little girl grow up without a mother, so I started CPR without hesitation.”

Jolie was then shocked with a defibrillator by paramedics three times, but had to spend 16 nights in hospital.

Louise added: “I hope this story helps inspire people to take the time to learn CPR.”
