Post Office scandal: Paula Vennells finally does the right thing and gives up her CBE

Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells has forfeited her CBE for “bringing the honours system into disrepute”, according to a list published on the Cabinet Office website.

Ms Vennells has now formally had her CBE stripped away by King Charles III, it emerged on Friday afternoon.

The ex-Post Office boss had been made a CBE in 2019, however after the Post Office scandal was placed under the microscope thanks to the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, she agreed to hand the honour back.

Ms Vennells was portrayed within the drama, which helped bring the scandal into greater focus, and has seen the Government intervene to say many of the convictions given to postmasters, wrongly convicted, would be quashed.

The scandal saw more than 700 sub-postmasters and mistresses have their reputations ripped apart due to allegations of theft and false accounting.

As a result, many were left bankrupt or facing a stretch in prison.

These inaccuracies came due to a computer system called Horizon.

In the years between 1999 and 2015, many postmasters, who ran branches of the Post Office, were found guilty and despite arduous campaigning, few got their convictions overturned.

The Government has since moved to exonerate those wrongly convicted.
