POLL: Should King Charles pay for his second Coronation in Scotland?

King Charles will be presented with the Honours of Scotland in a service of thanksgiving and dedication on Wednesday in a second Coronation ceremony.

The King and Queen Camilla will attend a service at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh where they will be presented with the Scottish crown jewels, sword and sceptre. The day will also see a procession along the Royal Mile, a 1-gun salute and a fly-past by the Red Arrows.

The events will be attended by leading figures from Scottish life and the Prince and Princess of Wales are also expected to make an appearance.

Alister Jack, Secretary of State for Scotland, said: “The service in St Giles’ will be an uplifting and fitting celebration of our new King and Queen, and will reflect the great affection we Scots have for them.

“I know that thousands of Scots will line the streets of Edinburgh to pay tribute to the King and welcome the royal family, once again, to Scotland.”

The Scottish Government has confirmed that it will foot the bill for the cost associated with the event, including the cost of a £22,000 specially-made ceremonial sword.

The National reported that the total bill would not be calculated until after events concluded, and discussions with the UK Government on “financial arrangements” would take place.

Critics have questioned the value of spending public funds on another royal event. Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie told the publication: “We are still in the worst cost of living crisis for decades, yet we are about to witness another absurd royal event of pomp and pageantry at the cost of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“In the past 18 months we have seen an extraordinary amount of public funds spent on royal events; from the Jubilee to the Coronation, tens of millions squandered when so many are struggling to feed their families.”
