POLL: Should a statue of Queen Elizabeth II be erected in Trafalgar Square?

Mayor of London candidate Susan Hall has revealed revived plans to erect a statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

London Assembly member and Conservative mayoral hopeful revealed that she would take up the proposal initially put forward by Minister for London Paul Scully.

She told Express.co.uk last week: “As Mayor, I will install a permanent statue of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in London, ideally at the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, in full consultation with the Royal Family.”

She thinks that the Fourth Plinth is a prominent location for the tribute to Britain’s longest-serving monarch and previously seconded a motion in the London Assembly calling for the statue to replace the modern art currently displayed.

Following the death of Her Majesty last year, London Mayor Sadiq Khan was reluctant to support the Fourth Plinth scheme being replaced by a permanent statue.

One of Ms Hall’s Tory rivals, Daniel Korski, also opposed the removal of the prominent public art commission location. He said last year: “The rejection of a statue for the late Queen on the Fourth Pillar demonstrates London’s love of the transient, adaptive relevance of the artworks.”

Recent years have seen the Four Plinth host a fly-like drone perched on an ice cream cone, a golden rocking horse and a giant blue rooster. Works are chosen by the Fourth Plinth Commission, appointed by the Mayor’s Office, with a new piece selected every two years. Samson Kambulu’s anti-colonial sculpture Antelope will be on display until September 2024.
