Police slam driver's terrible excuse as he blames young daughter for hitting 114mph on M4

Police officers have criticised a driver who sped up to a staggering 114mph, claiming it was because their crying daughter distracted them. The reckless speeder was so focused on their child, they didn’t even realise they had zoomed past a speed check or that a marked police car was tailing them.

Members of Wiltshire Police’s Specialist Operations unit took to X, previously known as Twitter, to share the shocking episode. The high-speed drive happened on the M4 motorway sometime after 8pm on Monday, February 26.

Police shared a serious warning in their tweet: “114mph along the M4 because your infant daughter is crying in the back, is the opposite of a good excuse. So distracted, this driver was unaware they’d passed the static speed check; or that they were then followed by a marked vehicle to Membury. #summons #fatalfive.”

The cops also shared an image on their tweet – a screenshot from a camera assumedly mounted inside their vehicle. The screenshot indicates the date, time, and the speeding driver’s speed of 114mph.

Legal experts at M.A.J Law have pointed out: “According to the Magistrates’ Court Sentencing Guidelines, a person speeding over 100mph is automatically at risk of a driving ban. You will also be sent to court for the magistrates to decide how long to ban you for. The length of the driving ban depends upon three things – the manner of driving (including the speed), the speed limit in place, and previous convictions.

“The higher the speed the more likely the court are to impose a driving disqualification.”
