An award-winning beach was shut down today after reports of suspected ‘human remains’ being found on the sands. Filey Beach, in North Yorkshire, was sealed off at around midday today as police started investigating. The probe began after “possible human bones” had been detected somewhere along the five-mile stretch of coastline.
In a notice issued to the public earlier this afternoon, the force advised people to stay away from the scene. A statement read: “Filey beach closure. For awareness, we’ve put a temporary closure on the beach at Filey following the discovery of possible human bones at around midday today.
“We’ll let you know when the items have been recovered and the beach reopens”, Yorkshire Live reported. Officers have since confirmed that the beach has been reopened and that the “human remains” were in fact an animal.
They said: “We’re pleased to report that the beach at Filey has reopened. The bones that were found have been confirmed as belonging to an animal.”
Filey Beach is a popular holiday destination with five miles of golden sands that saw the area named Beach of the Year by the Sunday Times in 2018.
Alongside the sands a historical promenade runs with beach chalets and a artistic sculpture trail. At low tide parts of the beach are over a quarter of a mile wide.
A 21-mile length of the King Charles III England Coast Path runs from Bridlington to Filey. Filey Brigg is also the start of the Cleveland Way Trail.

The North York Moors National Park trail will take walking Britons nine days to complete. It ends in Helmsley, after 109 miles.
Another long distance route ending – or starting – in Filey is the Yorkshire Wolds Way. This 79-mile route finishes in Hessle.
