Poland building new £32m high-speed train line linking country's most beautiful cities

Poland has set out to build a high-speed rail line linking the country’s capital Warsaw to the cities of Łódź and Wrocław.

The ambitious project will total 140 kilometres of track and include a four-kilometre-long tunnel.

Poland’s grand vision also involves the building of a brand new “mega-airport” between the capital and Łódź which will act as a central transit point.

The project is however a source of contention with some experts warning that plans for the new airport may be less viable in the post-Covid.

Poland’s government claims the project is still financially viable and highlights the airport’s potential as a hub for both cargo and passenger traffic.

Poland’s president Andrzej Duda described the project as “one of the most important that Poland is carrying out in the 21st century”.

Duda added: “We have to move forward continuously, and our direction is the CPK.

“The Second Polish Republic had its Gdynia, a port, a city and a shipyard, built on sand from a tiny fishing village. Now, we have a plan … construction of one of the largest airports and transport systems not only in Europe, but in the world. Do we need it? Yes!”

Michal O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, Poland’s largest airline by passenger numbers, has stated his opposition to the project previously.

Mr O’Leary said: “The idea of building…CPK is incomprehensible to me, I can honestly say that I don’t understand this investment.

“Even though taxpayers have spent billions on this senseless project, it is still possible to abandon it and not go further.”

He added: “This airport is unnecessary. It was planned in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Only very stupid politicians could decide to do something like that.”
