Players Championship match suspended due to medical emergency as stars taken off table

Play has been stopped at the Players Championship due to a medical emergency in the crowd during John Higgins’ semi-final clash with Zhang Anda. The stars and fans were taken away from the table while medics attended the scene inside the Telford International Centre.

Higgins led 12-5 in the opening frame as just a few minutes into the contest a commotion was heard in the audience, with the referee’s attention grabbed.

The two players could then be seen exiting the stage and ITV swiftly confirmed that a medical emergency had taken place and prompted a break in proceedings.

Fans then filtered out in order to give space to the medical team in attendance at the tournament, but returned within 15 minutes as Higgins and Zhang both took to the practice tables in the meantime.

The World Snooker Tour explained the situation in a post on social media: “Spectators and both players have left the arena after someone in the crowd has been taken ill.”

Higgins’ clash with Zhang was the first semi-final of the day, with Mark Selby’s final four contest against Mark Allen to follow at 7.00pm.
