Pilot's lucky escape after plane left teetering on the top of airport hangar after crash


A pilot had a miraculous escape when their aircraft was left teetering on the top of a an airport hangar after crashing.

Emergency services were scrambled to Long Beach Airport in the 2900 block of East Spring Street on Monday, July 10.

Long Beach Fire Department said the initial call came in at 2.18pm. It reported a single plane was involved in a crash.

Images from the scene show the aircraft with its tailgate suspended into the air with the nose smashed into the hanger.

The plane’s pilot, a man in his 40s, suffered minor injuries, reports the LA Times. He was taken to a local hospital for further assessments.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Around 45 gallons of fuel are said to have leaked from the aircraft onto the hangar, said firefighters.

Although, there were no actual fires as a result of the smash.

According to the Daily Mail, the pilot was practicing takeoffs and landings when the plane went down unexpectedly.

The pilot had managed to get himself free from the vehicle but had to be rescued by firefighters before he could be conveyed to hospital.

Kate Kuykendall, a spokesperson for the Long Beach Airport, told KTLA  the crash did not impact any commercial flights in or out of the airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. A preliminary update is expected in the coming days.
