Paul Scholes calls out four Man Utd stars in Bayern loss as pressure mounts on Ten Hag

During the half-time analysis for TNT Sports, Scholes admitted that Onana made a “big mistake” for Leroy Sane’s goal, having parried the forward’s effort from the edge of the box into his own goal – but that three of United’s defenders were also to blame for the second goal which saw Jamal Musiala ghost into the penalty area before laying the ball on a plate for Gnabry to score as pressure continues to ramp up on Erik ten Hag.

“He knows he has made a huge mistake,” Scholes said as he talked through Bayern’s opening goal. “But, I also think there are other things wrong with the goal. I think Manchester United in the first half played very well, but a few lapses in concentration and before you know it you are 2-0 down. It’s a big mistake from him and he needs to recover from that and concentrate.

“We mentioned this lad (Musiala) before the game. He has great skill, a tremendous turn of pace, but I am not sure what (Lisandro) Martinez is doing as well.

“(Diogo) Dalot is beaten, but Martinez goes backwards, him and (Sergio) Reguilon have one player between them and Reguilon should take that man and (Lisandro) Martinez should go to Gnabry who scores the goal, but he ends up going back and if anything, he blocks the keeper’s view and there is nothing he could do about it.”

Fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand agreed that Martinez was at fault for Gnabry’s goal, having also described Onana’s error as a “nightmare scenario” for the goalkeeper on his first Champions League game for United.

“This is a nightmare scenario for (Andre) Onana,” he said. “He is as confident as you like with his feet. We were sitting there saying wow with some of his passes, but as a goalkeeper you are paid to come in there and make saves.

“This is a great bit of skill from (Leroy) Sane to set it up as well, but he does not hit it with any purpose – it’s not wide, it’s not in the corners and Onana and his reaction afterwards, he should save this.

“It is meat and drink for him and he should be picking this up and looking for his next pass – it’s a bad mistake and one that he needs to recover from.”
