Outpouring of support for student as scholarship revoked over 'twerking' video

A high school student in the US had her scholarship endorsement revoked due to a video of her “twerking” at a homecoming after-party.

Kaylee Timonet, 17, also lost her position as the student government association president – despite having a 4.2 grade point average.

She was a senior at Walker High School in Walker, Louisiana.

The now-deleted video, filmed at a private event at Livingston Parish Country Club on September 30, showed Kaylee dancing behind a friend “twerking” at an after-hours party.

Kaylee says she was summoned to the school’s front office and made to watch the video.

She told a local news outlet: “They basically told me I should be ashamed of myself and that they were concerned about my afterlife if I wasn’t following basically God’s ideals, which made me cry even more.

“I felt like my life was over.”

During the meeting, Kaylee says she was told her scholarship application was being withdrawn.

The scholarship, awarded to only two students annually, was a big loss for Kaylee.

Her mother, Rachel Timonet, had a separate meeting with the school, describing the punishment as “unfair”.

The school community has come together to support Timonet by selling T-shirts featuring slogans such as “Let the Girl Dance” and “I stand with Kaylee Timonet.”

These slogans have been widely shared on social media platforms to show solidarity.

Kaylee believes that this outpouring of support has played a crucial role in helping her overcome the embarrassing incident.

She said: “The video was not inappropriate at all. I was simply worried that people would start disliking me after that.

“So, seeing that people were backing me regardless of what happened and that my achievements were still being acknowledged means the world to me.”
