One dead in chemical plant explosion as firefighters rush to put out fire


Fire crews are responding to an incident at a petrol chemical plant in Lemont following reports of a possible explosion, officials have confirmed.

Firefighters have reported a fire at the Illinois Seneca Petroleum Company plant on Tuesday morning. 

The Lemont Fire Department advised people to avoid the area, which is located on 127th Street and New Avenue.

At least two people have been injured and one has died, according to sources. 

At least one person has been reported dead as of noon on Tuesday. 

A chopper also flew above the scene showing damage to a tanker at the Seneca Petroleum plant.

The Lemont Fire District called the event an “active incident” in a Twitter and Facebook post, which was shared at around 10am on Tuesday. 

The crew also warned people to avoid the area of New Avenue and 127th Street.
