One dead and five students hospitalised as bus flips into ditch on way to band camp


One person has died after a bus with high schoolers traveling to band camp crashed in upstate New York.

A source familiar with the matter said that one person, an adult, died in the crash.

Five students are in critical condition after the bus rolled over on the I-84 in Wawayanda, Orange County.

A further 46 passengers suffered injuries.

New York State Police confirmed the charter bus was filled with members of Long Island high school band.

The bus was heading to Greeley, Pennsylvania for band camp when it rolled over.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said that around 50 people were aboard the bus at the time it rolled over.

Members of the Farmingdale High School band were on board according to officials from the Long Island school.

Helicopter images show the bus has fallen off of the highway downhill, landing in bushes and trees.

EMS personnel and ambulances have been summoned to the scene along with a number of helicopters.

Victims are being treated at the scene and rushed to New York area hospitals.

Both east and westbound lanes of the I-84 are shut down.

Farmingdale School District said in a statement: “We were informed that there had been an accident with Bus 1 en route to Greeley, PA for Band Camp.

“Police and emergency responders on the scene, as well as district administration. We will provide another update when more information becomes available. We ask for your patience as we gather more details.”
