October 9th On this day: Train crash between Harrow and Wealdstone leads to many deaths


71 years ago (1952)

Some 112 people died when the Perth to London sleeper rammed into the back of a local commuter train throwing carriages into the path of the London to Manchester and Liverpool Express travelling at 60mph.

An automatic warning system was then fitted across much of the rail network.

86 years ago (1937)

In Zhengding, China nine European Catholic priests were murdered by advancing Japanese troops as full scale war broke out between China and Japan.

Five thousand residents sought protection from the local Dutch Bishop Frans Schraven, among them 200 young women who feared being forced into sexual slavery by the soldiers.

11 years ago (2012)

The Taliban targeted Pakistani female education campaigner Malala Yousafzai, 15, on her way home from school. Malala was shot in the head and two other girls were also hit. But she recovered and at 17 became the youngest ever Nobel
Prize laureate.
